The heart of your business success lies within your ability to get new customers. Regardless of how good you are at your chosen field, regardless of how good your customer service is…if you don’t know how to find and create a steady flow of new customers, your business will not flourish. That should seem relatively obvious.

Yet, I’ve recently heard several business owners use phrases like “smoke & mirrors”, “BS”, and “lies” when it comes to marketing. Not all, but some business owners have a view of marketing that it’s seedy or dishonest. A few industries view marketing as something that is beneath them.

Marketing simply breaks down to communicating your message to the right target audience in a way that is meaningful to them. This can be done via a number of tactics. While I don’t deny that people have lied or exaggerated in their marketing, when it comes to marketing your business, simply tell the truth about why a specific target audience should work with you. It’s not BS or smoke & mirrors. It’s imperative for the survival of your business.

But for anyone who still views marketing as a bit of a farce, here are a few reasons why your business needs an effective, repeatable marketing strategy:

Marketing informs your target audience.

Your marketing will educate and enlighten your audience. It will answer their questions and help them understand how you can solve their problems. A good marketing strategy will help them get to know you and believe you.

Marketing sustains your presence.

We humans are highly distracted. We have tons of things to do during the day. Everyone is trying to get our attention. And we’re continuously being bombarded with messages. In order to stay top of mind with your prospective customers, they need to hear from you on a regular basis. You need to provide them with useful information consistently in order to keep their attention.

Marketing is an equalizer. You can compete with anyone.

Through digital marketing, you can create a presence on the internet that will rival any of your competitors, large and small. The internet is where everyone goes for information. When you become the source of the answers they seek, people will find you. The size of your business becomes less relevant.

Marketing engages your audience.

Through a proper marketing strategy, you will you’ll create a platform where customers and potential customers can engage with you. It’s one more way to create trust and believability. Engagement lets you know what people are really thinking and how they want to be communicated with.

Marketing helps you sell.

Business development requires the right combination of marketing and sales. A reliable marketing strategy will greatly enhance your sales efforts. By educating and enlightening your audience through your marketing, a big part of the “buyer’s journey” will already be completed by the time you have an actual sales conversation.

Marketing is not BS or smoke & mirrors. It’s your best opportunity to communicate in a meaningful way to your target audience.
