Questions to ask before you hire a Marketing Agency

There’s an interesting thing that happens when a business owner starts to truly see the value and necessity of a functional marketing plan. Once they finally understand the need for a consistent, productive marketing strategy, a major question arises. “Should we do this in house or outsource to an agency?” Many business owners finally decide that they would be far better off hiring an agency than doing the marketing internally. “Important Questions to Ask before you hire a Marketing Agency”

When you get to the point where you think that it would be best to hire an agency rather than do the marketing in house, don’t be hasty, you’ll probably have a number of questions and concerns. It’s important to not be hasty, or paralyzed by the unknown.  Below are some questions or topics to address.

Things to consider:

  • What are my best choices and options of marketing agencies?
  • Are they going to produce results?
  • If an agency is more expensive than the others, does that mean they are better?

When you hire an agency, you’re essentially buying on faith.

You don’t know if they will produce results for you or not. Yes, marketing is most definitely an investment. However, when you’re questioning a marketing agency, you need better and more precise answers than “there will be a return on investment”.  So here are a few questions you want to ask a marketing agency before you decide to hire them.

How will me measure success?

Of course, the bottom line is that you want more customers. However, how ill it be measured in your marketing? More visitors to your website? Inquiries? Referrals? Discuss with the agency how success will be measured and why.

How will you make us more visible on the internet?

The biggest marketing problem most businesses have is that they are virtually invisible on the internet. How will this agency rectify that?

How long will it take to see results?

While it’s true that there is no precise way to measure when a marketing strategy will begin to work, it’s still important to discuss wit the agency some reasonable expectations.

What is the best marketing strategy for my business and why?

You want to make sure that the agency you’re speaking to doesn’t have a “one size fits all” attitude when it comes to marketing. Every business has unique needs and every business needs a marketing program that will work for them.

Where will we start?

You want to understand what their process is for onboarding you and getting your project off the ground.

How much will it cost?

Be very clear about this going in. Have the agency be very specific about everything they will be doing for you and how much it will cost.

What is your agency an expert in?

Find out the types of clients they work best with and what their experience is. There are many different types of marketing agencies that specialize in different things. Please do plenty of research and find the one that’s going to be the best fit for your business.

There are a number of other questions you could ask a prospective marketing agency. But if you start with these, you will enhance your chances for marketing success.
