Should You Follow Marketing Trends?

We get a lot of questions from clients about what the latest marketing trends and tactics are. They often wonder if they should be engaged in those tactics. I even recently had a client make the following remark about email marketing: “Email marketing is so last year. I want to know what’s next year”.

Also, I’ve recently seen several articles that seem to support the idea that you should be following the latest trends and tactics. Articles like “41 marketing trends you can’t ignore in 2020” or “20 marketing trends in 2020 that will launch your marketing program”. Many discuss things like artificial intelligence, chatbots, influencer marketing, geo fencing, or micro moments. If you don’t know what most of those mean, don’t worry. You’re not alone. So, it continues to leave business owners with the question, “should I be following the latest marketing trends”?

Our short answer is…maybe. But that’s certainly not where to start or focus with marketing.

What should you do?

Yes, there are certain things we want you to be doing: updated website, SEO, social media, and video. Those other things have their place but that’s not what we suggest you focus on.

First and foremost, understand your ideal customer. What messages resonate best? Where do they get their information? How much do they embrace technology? How do they like to be communicated with?

Second, make sure you have a solid sales plan in place. Your sales plan will have a direct impact on the types of marketing you should be doing. Don’t just try marketing tactics for sake of trying new things. Use sales and marketing to feed each other. They are both vital.

Next, don’t over-complicate. When you find just a couple of things that your audience responds to, stick with them. This is especially true if you are doing your own marketing and not using a professional business development company.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment. I’m not trying to discourage from trying different tactics. But if you haven’t created the right message for the right audience, the tactics won’t matter.
